The cultural and family importance of baseball is explored in this personal essay. The author describes the impact baseball had on her, her mother, and her family growing up in Greenville, NC. She discusses the atmosphere of the games and how the sport taught her values. Stories from time spent at around the Elm Street Stadium in Greenville, NC are detailed.

Abstract:
The United Nations has named Durham’s Center for Community Self-Help as one of the most successful economic-development groups in the United States. The Independent gave four winners the annual Citizen Awards for their efforts toward poverty, women and minority businesses, and pollution.

Abstract:
In his ninth season at Duke, Michael Krzyzewski has established himself near the top of his profession and is a leading candidate to coach the 1992 U.S. Olympic basketball squad. The key to Duke’s success, and the trademark of Krzyzewski teams, is a fierce defense. Duke now enters the post-season tournaments with hope to win the National Collegiate Athletic Association championship.
