Abstract:
Teenagers David and Diane Bartz discovered a dugout canoe on the Neuse River. The Underwater Archaeology Branch with help from the U.S. Army Corp retrieved the vessel on March 8, 1978 and transported it to the branch's headquarters at Fort Fisher. A dugout in this condition is very rare and was, at that point, the only example found on the Neuse River and one of the few in the entire state.

On the State Capitol grounds in Raleigh a six week archaeological excavation took place between June and July 1978. Archaeologists were excavating to better understand the history of different state houses destroyed prior to the current structure.

Archaeology, Predictive Models, Computer Systems, SPSS, State Computer Center, Land Resource Information Service, New Hanover County Abstract: Archaeologists attempt to predict site locations by developing statistical models. New Hanover County is used as a test case with goals to establish a statewide comprehensive inventory system for archaeological resources.
