Abstract:
Pharmacists Mate Second Class William D. Halyburton, Jr., of Wilmington, is the state's other recipient of the Navy Medal of Honor during World War II. He was assigned to the 2d Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division and was killed in action May 15, 1945 while saving the life of a wounded Marine at the battle of Okinawa's Wana Draw.

Abstract:
""Named the 'Defense Capitol of the State,' Wilmington earned the distinction of American WWII Heritage City thanks, in part, to the work of a veteran who was inspired by the Port City's conflict response." The state's largest employer, The North Carolina Shipbuilding Company is located in Wilmington. The city earned its special heritage distinction on September 2, 2020.
