The preserve, which is administered cooperatively by the state and federal governments, is a mecca for hikers, nature lovers, and sightseers. A federal highway gives access to all areas of the preserve. Numerous trails, public campgrounds, and picnic areas are available for use. Almost 400,000 people visit each year.
