Abstract:
This study determined the economic value of reptiles and amphibians inhabiting the Charlotte-metropolitan area of North Carolina. Results provide a mechanism for placing a quantitative economic value on an important natural resource that can be used to mitigate for anthropogenic impacts.

Abstract:
Depth profiles are reported for ammonium and phosphorus in sediment pore water and concentrations in surface water along the length of Pocotaligo Swamp in South Carolina. The distributions were examined in relation to effluent from a wastewater treatment plant. Results show that the swamp is nitrogen-limited.

Spatial and temporal variation in anuran calling activity of four frog species was monitored at two ponds in the western Piedmont of North Carolina. Information on anuran calling patterns can be used to evaluate amphibian populations and improve monitoring programs.

East coast barrier islands such as Kiawah Island, South Carolina serve as critical habitat for endemic diamondback terrapins, which are particularly vulnerable to anthropogenic disturbances. A radiotelemetry study provides new insight to understanding terrapin habitat use and site fidelity.

Abstract:
A comparative ecology study of turtles inhabiting five golf courses and five farm ponds was conducted in the western Piedmont of North Carolina. Results indicate that both farm and golf course ponds can provide habitat for semi-aquatic turtles, and that the surrounding landscape can influence species abundances.
