For those interested in resources, the North Carolina Gourd Society was founded in Cary in 1937. It is the first such society in the country and is the principal chapter in the American Gourd Society. Events held by the society include the annual North Carolina Gourd Arts and Crafts Festival and the Gourd Gathering.

Moving to the Outer Banks in 1986, she became a report for the local newspaper, "The Coastland Times" in 1990 and has covered area happenings ever since. She has also been involved with Radio Hatteras, a vital source of information to local residents, especially during tropical storms, since its inception eleven years ago.
