Abstract:

On August 27, 1891, train No. 9 on the old Richmond and Danville Railroad, left Salisbury for Asheville and Paint Rock at 1:45 a.m. There were five cars on the train, consisting of one baggage car, two coaches, one sleeper, and a private car. Bostain Bridge, a high, concrete structure, was located three miles west of Statesville. Just as the train hit the bridge, it left the rails and the entire train plunged to the bottom - 70 feet below. Four members of the crew and many passengers were killed.
