Abstract:
Cape Lookout is an important maritime site that has remained neglected in the history books. Directly off the Graveyard of the Atlantic, the area off the North Carolina Outer Banks, Cape Lookout was home to pirates and Indians. Sir Walter Raleigh's expedition to the New World sent Captain Arthur Barlow in 1584 to explore the area. Cape Lookout remained an uninhabited region since 1854, with occupation minimized in the area. President Lyndon Johnson has recently recommended to Congress that the area become the newest addition to the nation's National Seashore Park.

Abstract:
Captain James W. Willis (1844-1920) was a whaling captain and fisherman who fished out of Morehead City, Carteret County. After years of fishing with baited lines, he developed the idea of sinking a net to increase fish catches and eliminate the need for fishing line. Though undated, his first experiment involved bricks tied to a net. The contraption, now known as a sink net, was sunk and left for an hour. Afterwards Willis and his crew hauled in 2,000 pounds of fish, quadrupling a typically successful day of fishing with hand lines.

Abstract:
The grand and mighty Gulf Stream flows quite near to the coast of North Carolina and is in fact somewhat nearer to the North Carolina coast than to the other coast of any other state except Florida. The water of the Gulf Stream is warmer that the water on either side of the flow, and while the sea water off the North Carolina shore is green, the water of the Gulf Stream is indigo blue.
