Mike Zlotnicki has a tradition of clamming with his family and friends every year on their summer vacation. Zlotnicki describes their latest trip and the events that occur. Ethical questions about fishing and hunting are raised and discussed in the essay. Also discussed is the importance of environmental education to preserve these family traditions.

Chris Douglas, 48 of Sanford is host of the new television program, "Carolina ALL Out" (carolinaallout.com) which features hunting and fishing across North Carolina. The program carries on the tradition of "The Southern Sportsman" hosted by the late Franc White and later Joe Albea's "Carolina Outdoor Journal" on UNC-TV, which has recently ceased production.

Good fishing can be found at most of the state parks in North Carolina. The best places to fish, the type of fish stocked at each park, and the best times of year to fish are described for 12 state parks. The fishing at Lake Norman, New River, South Mountains, Jordan Lake, Kerr Lake, Morrow Mountain, Fort Fisher, Fort Macon, Merchants Millpond, Pettigrew, Hanging Rock, and Eno River State Parks are all detailed. Hanging Rock, Eno River, and Fort Macon are highlighted with anecdotes and advice from parks employees and local fishing experts.

Eddie Bridges of Greensboro was awarded the Budweiser Conservationist of the Year title in 2004. He received a $50,000 grant which he put into his NC Wildlife Habitat Foundation. The foundation has raised $4 million to fund projects across the state. In 2012, Field & Stream Magazine named him its 2012 Conservation Hero of the Year.

The acrylic painting, \"Redheads in Needlerush,\" by Delaware artist Richard Clifton is this year's 2012 North Carolina Waterfowl Conservation Stamp and Print. This is the second year in a row that his painting won, and he placed second in the 2010 contest. Over thirty wildlife artists from twenty states submitted entries.

Christine Kelly, a wildlife diversity biologist with the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, is one of nine nationwide recipients of a 2011 Recovery Champion Award given by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for outstanding efforts to preserve endangered species. Kelly was honored for her work with the Northern flying squirrel which is found only in small groups in the state's highest mountains.

Over one hundred years ago anadromous fish had unrestricted movement up the Cape Fear River in the spring. These types of fish live in salt water and spawn in fresh water. However, construction of three locks and dams in the early 1900s blocked their movement. In June 2001, the Army Corps of Engineers began work on rock arch rapids at Lock & Dam No. 1. When completed this stepladder will allow the fish to swim past the dam and further upstream.

Dove hunting is one of the most sought after recreational opportunities that North Carolina game lands offer. The annual North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association held in Fall 2017 in the Sandhills Game Land. It presents an opportunity to showcase trained hunting dogs in a myriad of skills, from duck retrieval and search to desire to work. Author Mike Zlotnicki participated with his dog Annie and discusses the lessons that he learned along the way.

The program has over two million acres (including national forests) and the Commission actively manages about half a million of that. The program's primary purpose is to provide opportunities for hunting and at the same time conserve wildlife species. The Piedmont and Coastal Plains regions are highlighted.

Since its inception in 1986, the Big Rock Marlin Tournament has advanced more than $7.5 million to charitable organizations in eastern North Carolina. The Crew members on the boat Mercenaria caught the winning prize, a 572.6-pound blue marlin on the first day of the 64th annual tournament.
