In Sylva, North Carolina, Jackson Paper is a paper mill that produces paper for the construction of corrugated containers. The plant is one of three paper mills in the United States that does not discharge waste into surface or city water supplies. Rather, all of the water the plant uses is recycled, as is the material they use to make paper.

The ELF—a conglomeration of a car, bike, and trike—intends to ease traveling in an increasingly urbanized world. Companies on a roll with this form of transportation include the profiled Organic Transit of Durham and its European counterpart, Schaeffler AG. Promotion of the product included these advantages: safer than a bicycle, more weather resistant than a scooter, and not subject to laws related to the electronic bike market.

Efforts to make the college campus a home away from home can be perceived in Lees-McRae’s pet policy. This policy can be perceived in the animals that students are allowed to have in buildings such as the Banner Elk School. The welcoming of pets can be measured in the Pet Council, which enforces rules and handles complaints. It is also reflected in the policy that distinguishes between an assistance animal and a pet.
