Common Market is a popular restaurant and marketplace in Charlotte. The original location opened in the Plaza Midwood neighborhood in 2002 and another opened in South End in 2009. Sadly, the South End location closed in July 2017, but co-owners Blake Barnes, Chuck Barger, and Graham Worth have found a new location just 1,153 paces from the old spot.

In a new series of dinners taking place around Charlotte, black chefs in the city aim to put an end to stereotypes and show their range in the kitchen. A recent Soul Food Sessions dinner explored African food with six African-American chefs working in the south cooking together for the meal. The black chefs knew they would be stereotyped and guests would expect them to cook soul food, and so they did. Each chef is profiled, their reasons for cooking are shared, and the reason for the dish selection is detailed.

The word “local” has become a meaningless word in the restaurant business in Charlotte. Many restaurants who only get a few of their ingredients from local farms claim the word to justify price increases. This practice has forced restaurants who only use local ingredients to change the way they express it, by saying “farm to table,” “sourced locally from North Carolina,” “farm-driven,” and other phrases to ensure customers know what they are purchasing.
