Bare Dark Sky Observatory is a new Certified Star Park in Burnsville, North Carolina. This is the first such certification to be given in the southeastern United States, and one of only fifteen in the world. The observatory features the largest telescope in the region, and offers a pitch-dark atmosphere to ensure an optimum star-gazing opportunity.

Geocatching is the new form of treasure hunting. All one needs to partake in this GPS-driven treasure hunt is a GPS-enabled device, and an account at geocatching.com. Burnsville residents hide catches and encourage people to explore sites in town on their hunt. Many catches involve hiking on the numerous trails in the area, allowing geocatchers to explore the natural beauty of the area while searching for their prize.

Exercising an ability to be assertive, girls in grades three through eighth can learn from GOTR coaches and this non-profit organization. During ten weeks’ practice for the twice a year, end of season 5Ks, girls engage in age appropriate exercises and discussions about becoming a stand-byer, to help curb bullying on and off the track.

Frank Holder of Lewisville creates sculptures from discarded nuts, bolts, heavy machinery parts, and other pieces of scrap. A welder with the RJ Reynolds Company for thirty years, he has no formal art training but can make objects from almost anything. Shovels turn into ducks; old pipes become dachshunds. His work is sold through a number of galleries both in and out of state.
