Joseph E. Hunt, Institute of Government faculty member, received the 1998 Most Valuable Member award of the International Association of Assessing Officers. Hunt's specialty is tax administration and real estate appraisal. The award recognizes his thirty years of service as past president of the eight-thousand member IAAO, committee member, and educator.

Gladys Hall Coates, wife of Albert Coates, the founder of the Institute of Government at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, celebrated her 100th birthday on May 19, 2002. She has received numerous honors and awards throughout her life. Mr. and Mrs. Coates were the first couple \"to have separate endowed professorships named in their honor.\"

Warren Jake Wicker is one of five individuals chosen to receive a 2002 Chancellor's Award from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Wicker has been a faculty member at the Institute of Government almost 47 years, and though officially retired in 1991, still comes to work every day.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Government celebrates the former governor, James E. Holshouser, Jr., with the Distinguished Professorship in Public Law and Government endowment. Holshouser served four terms in the North Carolina House of Representatives beginning in 1963. While governor, Holshouser implemented highly regarded economic improvements and education initiatives.
