Music Maker Relief Foundation is celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2004. The organization was founded by Tim Duffy who was distressed “over the living conditions of the living legends he was meeting in the early 1990s as he explored the world of blues musicians.” The organization focuses on helping down-and-out blues musicians overcome destitution and in so doing help them to rediscover their voices and perform again.

Abstract:
On February 21, 2001, the North Carolina Symphony will play a grand-opening gala concert in the new 1700-seat Meymandi Concert Hall in Raleigh. For the first time in its 68-year history, the symphony will have its own performance hall, designed strictly with musicians in mind. Prior to this, the orchestra played in Memorial Auditorium, a venue shared by a variety of performing groups.

Robroy Farquhar discovered Flat Rock in 1940, and soon moved his theater troupe, the Vagabond Players, from New York City to the North Carolina mountains. Sauls discusses the development of the Flat Rock Playhouse, which the North Carolina General Assembly designated in 1961 as the "State Theater of North Carolina" and which is rated today as one of the nation's top ten summer theaters.

The North Carolina Award is the highest civilian honor given by the state for a lifetime of achievement in the fields of public service, fine arts, science, and literature. The award has been presented annually since 1964. The award winners for 2003 are Etta Baker, musician; Jaki Shelton Green, author; Frank Borden Hanes, benefactor; James Baxter Hunt, Jr., governor; Mary Ann Scheer, artisan; and William E. Thornton, medicine.
