Troy Medlin, also known as T. Roy, is leader of the metal band Sourvein. Their fourth studio record, Aquatic Occult, fully embraces the inspiration of the North Carolina coastline. The band incorporated recordings of the surf at Kure Beach, sonar, and bountiful reverb to evoke an oceanic atmosphere.

Hillsborough resident and noted bluesman Ironing Board Sam has been given the opportunity to play music again. Samuel Moore’s history and his influence on music in America and the blues is recorded. Moore has been given the opportunity to perform again after Hillsborough’s The Music Maker Relief Foundation has provided assistance to him and re-released his record. The group is dedicated to preserving and promoting all forms of traditional music.

In response to the craze for hard soda, Big Boss Brewing Company recently released a limited Root Beer Stout. The drink recipe was created by Brewmaster Brad Wynn and Jon Lehman, founder of Brood Soda in Durham. Lehman specializes in creating unusual combinations of flavors that are popular among craft-beer drinkers.

Cody Maltais teaches the fundamentals of mixed martial arts at his new gym in Durham, Elevate MMA Academy. Before mixed martial arts found its way to mainstream acceptance, it had a negative reputation and wasn’t seen as a sport. Now, Maltais and others have built a remarkable local martial arts scene that is even drawing support from regional schools.
