The Gertrude S. Carraway Award of Merit recognizes organizations and individuals demonstrating strong commitment to promotion of historical preservation. Among the 2006 winners are Fayetteville and the Fayetteville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau for acquiring the condemned 1890 Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railway Depot and rehabilitating it into a transportation museum and Brooks Graham's restoration of her mother's antebellum farmhouse, the Farrish-Lambeth House in Sanford.

John Greene, Sr., of John Greene Chrysler Dodge Jeep in Morganton, was selected to receive the prestigious Time Magazine Quality Dealer Award for 2006 in North Carolina. The dealership is in its third generation of ownership, and Greene's grandchildren work part time while in school. Greene was one of sixty-six dealers selected from over 19,500 nationwide nominations to receive the award.

State funds reaching over $108 million were paid in 1956-1967 for the salaries of 33,438 teachers, principles, and supervisors. There were 892 more instructional personnel paid that in the previous year, and the average classroom teacher received an average salary of $3,131.74. The North Carolina General Assembly was also able to set a pay schedule for teachers and principles related to educational degrees and number of teachers overseen, while retirement laws increased the minimum benefits for teachers, similar to other state employees.

A half century ago, North Carolina made its first systematic registration of motor vehicles, instructing drivers to make their own license plate with an assigned set of numbers. Now, the manufacture of 1960 plates will have a uniform color scheme of black on yellow and display 'drive safely.' The plates will be distributed from 80 branch offices, after being pressed and printed through the prison system.

From first grade to graduate university courses, spending on public education is approximately 70 cents out every General Fund dollar, the majority of this devoted to educational services below the college level.
