Samuel Bissette, a native of Wilson, has been with Peoples Savings and Loan since 1940. He is also a watercolorist. Recently Wachovia Bank and Trust Company commissioned a series of paintings by him for their art collection. The result was a collection of forty watercolor paintings of North Carolina scenes titled \"Portrait of North Carolina.\"

By day, Mel Kester is a corporate executive at Cannon Mills, Inc., in Kannapolis. He is vice president of the company's award winning Package Design Department. In the after-hours he is a painter. He began in a serious way in 1969 and has now produced over four hundred works, many of which have found their way around the country and across the world.

After years of presenting its collection of countless items in an ill-arranged manner and displaying them darkly in row after row of old cases, the North Carolina State Museum of Natural History in Raleigh has a new look. The problems were a small budget and an even smaller staff. The new look is the result of over $400,000 in structural and mechanical improvements and a more realistic budget.

The Hampton Mariner's Museum in Beaufort was an outgrowth of an idea former state legislator Roy W. Hampton had in 1952. Hampton later died, and along with a lack of state funding, the museum languished. The cause was taken up in 1975 by Charles McNeill. This article describes the museum's growth and development from that point.

Two brothers-in-law, Albert G. Segal and Alvin E. Levine, founded Pic 'n Pay, a self-service shoe store, in 1977. Their first store opened in Charlotte the same year. Twenty years later there are 365 stores in ten Southeastern states, and growth is spreading into the Midwest. Company sales have gone from zero to $60 million in two decades.

Price/McNabb Advertising began in a basement office in Asheville over a decade ago. Since then the agency was elected in 1973 to membership in the American Association of Advertising Agencies. The company now employs twenty-three, and has added an office in Raleigh. With annual billings of $4 million, it ranks as one of the top agencies in North and South Carolina.
