Malt-O-Meal, Inc., founded in Minnesota in 1919, makes ten of the nation's fifty best-selling cereals. Their cereals cost less than major brands through cost-cutting techniques, such as packaging in bags instead of boxes. Major grocery chains and small town ones, like Family Dollar and Dollar General, sell the products. In September 2009, Malt-O-Meal opened a 350,000-square-foor factory in Asheboro.

The ferries Southport and Fort Fisher, which carry cars and pedestrians across the Cape Fear River, are part of the country's second-largest ferry fleet. Only the state of Washington has more ferries than North Carolina, which operates seven routes and twenty-one ferries carrying over one million vehicles and 2.5 million passengers.

Roxanne Quimby and Burt Shavitz started Burt's Bees Maine, transforming a roadside honey stand into a multimillion dollar business. In 1994, the company moved to Creedmoor. The founders have since gone their separate ways, and the Clorox Company purchased the business three years ago for $925 million. The company expects to gross $250 million in 2010.

Open Grounds Farm in Carteret County is the country's largest farm east of the Mississippi River. Its 57,000 acres cover almost a fifth of the county and 63 percent of its farmland. The land passed through several owners from the early 20th-century until it was sold to an Italian concern in 1974. The farm is known to few outside the agricultural world.

The USS North Carolina was one of the most famous fighting ships of World War II. Now it is moored in Wilmington as a memorial to those who served during the war. Corrosion on the hull has been discovered, and Taylor Brothers Marine Construction Inc. of Beaufort has been hired to remove it. The first phase will cost $2.1 million with another $15 million to follow.

On October 15, 2011, Wachovia Bank & Trust Company, one of North Carolina's most famous names fades away, to be replaced with Wells Fargo & Company signs. Wells Fargo purchased the bank in 2008. John Grimes Medlin, Jr., who joined Wachovia in 1959 and who was CEO of the bank for sixteen years, recalls his days with the bank and what made Wachovia an outstanding bank.

Reggie Fountain managed his successful motorboat company for 30 years building approximately 10,000 speed boats for celebrities, dignitaries, and presidents. After years of successes his company and subsidiaries declared bankruptcy in late 2009. Fountain's company meant more than making him a millionaire but kept hundreds of Beaufort County citizens employed, becoming the county's largest private employer.

David Campbell is CEO of Charlotte-based Boxman Studios LLC. The company refurbishes cargo containers for reuse as places where vendors and exhibitors can sell and show their wares. Used containers can be purchased for under $2,000, and his staff will spend three to four weeks modifying them. Campbell then leases them for $2,500 the first day, then $500 for each day thereafter.
