Best Doctors, Inc. is a Boston-based company that offers one way to rate physicians. The company asks about 35,000 physicians and surgeons nationwide to grade other doctors in their specialty. Those with the highest averages make the final list. In the state, about 5 percent, or 889 doctors made the list. Business North Carolina lists doctors in the state who made the list in twenty-one specialties, including cardiovascular, infectious disease, nephrology, and ophthalmology.

A small number of businesses in the country specialize in rescuing and preserving rare books and other documents. Don Etherington's Greensboro-based company, Etherington Conservation Services, is the largest one. Etherington began his training in his native London at age thirteen and earned an international reputation following a two-year project restoring rare, flood-damaged books in the national library in Florence, Italy. He has worked at the U.S. Library of Congress and the University of Texas. His company in Greensboro opened with a staff of three and now employs thirty. Their current high-profile project is restoring the North Carolina Museum of Art's four-volume edition of Audubon's The Birds of North America.

There are over 200 crushed-stone quarries in the state, producing about 75.7 million tons of rock worth $589 million in 2005. Most of the rock is used for road work and other construction projects. Buying land for a quarry and getting all the local and state government permission required to operate it takes between five and eight years. Because of this, many quarry operators buy or lease sites that are already approved.

Kevin Schoolcraft, president of Masterpiece Staircase and Millwork, Inc., is BUSINESS NORTH CAROLINA magazine's 2006 North Carolina Small Business of the Year. The company, which was founded in Matthews in 1987, employs thirteen workers and makes custom staircases and millwork. Staircases for luxury homes can cost $100,000 or more. Schoolcraft bought the company eighteen months ago. It was losing money then, but projected revenues for 2006 are over $1.2 million.

Founded in 1882, the family business is now in its fourth generation and is one of the state's 593 independent pharmacies. Martin discusses how the pharmacy has evolved over the years from a dispenser of pills to being involved in the health care of his customers.

The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAA), founded in 1912, is the nation's oldest collegiate athletic conferences of historically black colleges. After holding the conference basketball tournament in Raleigh for six years, the conference moved it to Charlotte. Martin discusses the success of the tournament in its new location.

Summit Hill, a 34-acre horse farm in Apex, is part of one of the state's fastest growing industries. Owners Ben and Erin Tursam provide boarding, grooming, and lessons. The North Carolina Horse Council estimates that North Carolinians, both owners and riders, spend over $500 million a year in the horse business.

Turning House Millworks, located in Landis, and its sister company, Turning House Furniture in Bassett, Virginia, convert long-abandoned non-historic mills and factories into building materials. In so doing, the company saves thousands and thousands of trees. The company recently introduced its furniture collection made from rare and extinct vintage wood rescued from the old buildings.

Ashe County Cheese is the state's only cheese factory. Located in West Jefferson, it has produced quality cheese since 1930. Kraft Corp. started the company, and the conglomerate sold it in 1975. Several owners ran the company before Wisconsin-based Newberg Corners Cheese, Inc. purchased it in 1994.

Steve and Sandy Forest, who started Brushy Mountain Bee Farm near Wilkesboro over twenty years ago, is BUSINESS NORTH CAROLINA magazine's 2009 North Carolina Small Business of the Year. The Forests not only raise bees and sell honey, but they also have a web site, publish a catalog, and supply beekeepers worldwide with supplies through a mail-order service.
