As North Carolina State Parks turns 100, tourism has grown from 4.2 million visitors in 1972 to 15 million visitors in 2015. The state parks system includes 41 parks and covers 225,537 acres.

As the North Carolina State Park system reaches its 100th year of service, they reflect back on how they attain their missions of protecting the ecological diversity of the state, educating citizens, and promote recreation. Highlights include the expanded Lake James, the volunteers who have made the program successful, and the Mountains-to-Sea Trail.

The newly opened Bodie Island Lighthouse, on the North Carolina Outer Banks, is a fifteen acre site that is home to not only the light house and and old keeper's residence, but also a variety of wildlife such as snakes, heron, ibis, deer, and otters.

Abstract:
The Eno River has recently become full of hydrilla verticillata, an invasive species of aquatic weed from South Asia. It grows too plentifully in North Carolina, causing rivers to become sluggish, competing with local species, decreasing oxygen levels in rivers, amongst other things. The leaders of Eno State park are looking for ways to better contain hydrilla, with some success.

The area around Merchants Millpond State Park has built a mighty reputation partly on artifacts aged objects, including a Clovis point 10,000 years old discovered in a field near the pond. The area’s fauna and flora, such as six alligators and two hundred year old Cypress trees, also help to make the lake created in 1811 a must see for 240,000 visitors annually.

The second installment in a three-part series about the Mountains-To-Sea Trail focuses on North Carolina’s Piedmont Region, which unlike its Mountain neighbor, is still taking shape. The ability to complete the trail will depend largely on private landowners and their willingness to allow trail easements across their property.

Benton MacKaye’s efforts to beautify the area blighted by excessive lumbering and erosion generated the creation of a trail that today covers 2,000 miles and runs through fourteen states. The alliance of volunteer hiking clubs and what became known as the Appalachian Trail Conservancy yielded the trail completed in 1937. Today, groups such as the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy help to upkeep the trails and surround region, along with minimizing activities like logging and development.

This is the first installment in a three-part series about the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. The history of the trail dates back to 1977 and is detailed here. The trail stats at Clingman’s Dome near the Tennesse border and ends at Jockey’s Ridge on the Outer Banks near the Atlantic Ocean. The Mountains portion of the trail covering trail segments 1-5 are covered here. The views, wildlife, and the work needed to maintain the trail are described. Allen De Hart's biography is also included as was the founder of the Friends of the Mountain-to-Sea Trail group and its staunchest supporter.
