Abstract:

Of the men who have served as Vice-President of the United States, seven have died in office. One of these was William Rufus King, a North Carolinian, who filled his post for only 25 days, the shortest term of office in our government's history. King, who was suffering with tuberculosis and recuperating in Cuba on inauguration day, had the oath of office administered by the American consul and lived only long enough to return to his home in Alabama before dying on April 18, 1853.

October 17, 1962 marks the 55th anniversary of the death of North Carolina's poet and, \"sweetest singer\", John Charles McNeill. McNeill produced the majority of his work between 1902 and 1904, and was awarded the Patterson Cup in 1905, for the best literary production of the year.

Abstract:

Greensboro-born William Sydney Porter, more commonly known as writer O. Henry, led a romantic life and created a wide body of work decidedly worth revisiting as his popularity seems to sustain the test of time. Considered the father of the American short story, he wrote of love and romance, often in a jocular or sentimental vein. Readers are often as interested in O. Henry's life story as they are his work.
