The National Wildlife Federation’s annual Environmental Quality Index study indicated that wildlife lost ground in 1980. Habitat loss is cited as the main factor for the decline. Water, living space and soil also showed a decline, whereas minerals, air and forests remained almost unchanged.

The nation’s drinking water supply is threatened by chemical contamination from industrial wastes that seep into the waterways. At certain concentrations, contaminants can cause nausea, dizziness, tremors, blindness, and potentially cancer. The Mississippi and Ohio Rivers are among the most polluted waterways.

The National Wildlife Federation has called upon the nation to observe 1982 as the Year of the Eagle to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the selection of the bald eagle as its national symbol. The bald eagle is now an endangered species throughout most of the country due to pesticides, contaminants, and shooting.

The National Wildlife Federation has expressed its support for the Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act Amendment, which would provide additional funds to state wildlife agencies for wildlife restoration, hunter education, and public target range development. The bill would expand excise-tax to include various component parts of firearms’ ammunition.

Many species of birds are endangered because of destruction of their habitats. Warren B. King, chairman of the U.S. Section of the International Council for Bird Preservation, cites the Mauritius parakeet, Spanish imperial eagle, and imperial woodpecker as examples of near-extinct bird populations.

Many of the nation’s best remaining wildlife habitats are threatened by uncontrolled population growth and development. A report by the National Wildlife Federation examined ten endangered habitats in need of federal protection. These areas include the Bridger-Teton National Forest, Columbia River Basin, California Desert, Chesapeake Bay, Mississippi Delta, Adirondack Lakes, prairie potholes, tallgrass prairies, and barrier islands of the East and Gulf Coast.
