In 1852, Henry Sheppard, Clerk of Court stated that there were no marriage bonds in the Court House previous to 1796. He found a marriage bond for William Spain and Nancy Church, dated Feb. 15, 1797.

On Oct. 29, 1787 in Burke Co., GA, a deposition was taken of Israel Joyner concerning a court case between George Moye and Benjamin Barrow. Joyner said he was in Pitt County, NC in January 1787, getting ready to leave for Georgia, when Benjamin Barrow told him he shot and killed Moye’s mare. On June 7, 1782, In Pitt County, Jonathan Jolly, gave a deposition that George Moye’s horses had destroyed his wheat field.
