John Moreland, a singer-songwriter from Tulsa, Oklahoma, is performing at Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro on July 19, 2017. His music is a mixture of folk, country, and roots rock. In an INDY interview, Moreland discusses his solo approach to the new record, Big Bad Luv, his musical influences, and recent songwriter discoveries.

Sofar Sounds is an international string of concerts in close quarters that uses subsequent online streams to subsidize pay-what-you-will shows packed into spaces as small as apartments. With its invite-only guest list, undisclosed lineup, secret location, and online integration, it's an update on the familiar house show model. In Raleigh, Sofar featured the band Jack the Radio, celebrating its fourth record Badlands.

The Raleigh arts and music festival Artsplosure is celebrating its 35 anniversary this year. The festival was started as a way to get Raleigh residents to visit the downtown. Now, Artsplosure is struggling to remain relevant with all of the changes to the downtown over the years. Around the time of the festival, there will be at least five other festivals or events in downtown Raleigh. Promoters are looking for ways to attract attendees to keep the festival alive.

The Beaufort Music Festival reflects the vibrancy and energy of North Carolina’s modern music. The festival hosts acts from many genres of music. The culture of Beaufort is highlighted for making this one of the best festivals in the state. The festival is noted as one of the state’s best-kept secrets.

Friends with Benefits, a new nonprofit, was recently created to help local musicians get supplemental health insurance. After witnessing several Durham area musicians suffer major health scares without insurance, the group hopes to support 10 to 30 musicians in the first couple of years. The group hopes to have applications ready by next summer and will continue to throw benefits to raise money for the nonprofit.
