Waterfowl resources are facing threats of wetland habitat loss, lead shot poisoning, and overharvesting. In response, North Carolina hunters are cutting back on Canadian goose harvest and encouraging personal commitment towards wetlands conservation.

There is increasing debate over outdoor use of public and private lands. Privatization of federal public lands will affect us all but mostly those who wish to use public lands for recreation. The principal argument is that private ownership results in better, more profitable management.

Last summer, fires destroyed a portion of Yellowstone National Park. Studies are assessing the effects of the fires on big game winter range within the park boundaries and how the loss of that habitat will affect bison, elk and other large ungulates.

Abstract:
Railroads have enabled the public to access resources at a faster pace, but this service is being abandoned rapidly. Consequently, management dilemmas are arising between land developments versus natural habitat protection. One suggestion is for Congress to introduce legislation that transfers back to federal ownership a certain amount of forest land for every mile of railroad track abandoned.
