There are over 1,430 highway historical markers in North Carolina. The state's newest marker is located south of Tarboro on Hwy 33. It was unveiled in July 2006, on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the state's first electric cooperative, Edgecombe-Martin County Electric Membership Cooperation, and recognizes the place where an electric cooperative first brought power to rural North Carolina.

North Carolina is known as the “Good Roads State” because it contains more scenic or otherwise interesting drives than any state in the nation. The North Carolina Department of Transportation recently published a set of designated scenic byways, complete with directions on how to tour them. Among citizens’ favorite drives are trips through Mount Mitchell, Wake Forest, Cape Hatteras, and the Neuse River Ferry to Morehead City.

Adela and Javier Herrera came to Surry County from Mexico in the 1970s, working first in tobacco and textiles and later in pre-fabricated metal buildings. They later bought into the business and in 1997 began their own manufacturing business, Carolina Carports. Today the company has a network of 2,500 dealers and sales centers in twenty-eight states. Carolina Carports ships over one hundred and ten truckloads of steel buildings each week.

The Tuscarora War raged off and on for a year and a half in eastern North Carolina as the Native Americans living in Eastern North Carolina in 1711 fought to regain their independence. It ended with the four day battle at Fort Neoheroka, March 20-23, 1713. Over 600 Tuscarora men, women, and children were killed and 400 taken prisoner. Gery recounts the events.
