The state’s politicians have let Smithfield Packing abuse workers in Tar Heel, and it is time both groups clean up their mess. Smithfield needs to improve working conditions and allow its workers to unionize. The company also needs to improve its plant’s safety, support training and education programs for immigrant Hispanic workers, and stop supporting hog farms which pollute the area water supply. State politicians need to pressure the meatpacker to make these changes to protect workers and the state’s environment.

Abstract:
Many people misunderstand what it is like to be transgender. Descriptions of the gender orientation, the biological issues which may cause it, and personal stories from transgender individuals are shared. Three individuals who are a part of the Southern Association for Gender Education share their personal experiences as transgender individuals. Rachel, Anderson Wiltshire, and Karli Rabe share their experiences and highlight what makes them normal despite their gender orientation.

John Edwards is competing for the democratic nomination for president. Edwards’ message is strong, but his campaign seems to be stuck. One of Edwards’ main campaign themes has been anti-poverty, but he has been called a hypocrite for his massive 28,000-square-foot house near Chapel Hill. While many like Edwards, critics point out that his lack of political insight may be costing him. Edwards’ struggles and his chances of winning are discussed.

City leaders are intent on changing development patterns from suburban to urban and designing specific transit corridors in the denser urban areas where residents can walk and bike. The North Carolina Stop Torture Now coalition is the winner of a 2007 Indy Citizen Award. The group was created after learning of the Johnston County CIA contractors Aero Contractors’ involvement in the CIA’s torture program. The group believes torture is morally wrong as well as constitutionally forbidden and practically useless. The group has held several protests and is intent on convincing state and federal authorities that the charges against Aero Contractors warrant investigation and the CIA’s rendition program should be ended.

The discount stores owned by Art Pope and the cheap merchandise he sells at them are detailed. Pope’s stores target minority individuals in low-income areas. Pope’s family history, business model, his millions of dollars in political contributions, and his ultra-conservative political philosophy are also discussed in depth. Seven toys and clothing products from which Pope makes millions off of in his store are shown and connections are drawn between them and Pope’s political views.
