Learning Together is a preschool in Raleigh that incorporates a basic formula of nine special-needs kids, ages 3-5, in a classroom with nine others of similar ages. The program has been active since 1975, but continues to face funding challenges. In 2015, Enloe High School’s Student Council raised $118,000 for Learning Together, providing a much-needed service of monetary assistance as well as volunteer time.

13-year old Capital Area Soccer League star Larissa Estrada began collecting used soccer equipment and sending it to children in Nicaragua. After her murder, the project Dale Lari was formed to memorialize her and continue her work. The program is currently purchasing a bus to and filling it with soccer equipment so that both can be donated to their sister club in Nicaragua called Cachorros and has developed social media tools to help teams in third-world communities use strategic planning and technology free of charge to help make their clubs successful.

Cary artist Roger Ehrlich’s 24-foot “shimmer tower” dedicated to all victims of war worldwide has been erected at the State Capitol. Ehrlich’s tower allows people to ring the bell in memory of a victim of war and to write their names on the tower itself. The tower is meant to make people consider the cost of war and to help with the healing process for those suffering from loss.

She returned to her low-wage job at Burger King on West Club Boulevard where she earns just $7.85 an hour. She and many other fast-food workers are planning a nation-wide protest of stepping off the job for a day to draw attention to the country's problem of low-income jobs. The rally is called \"Strike Day' and is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. August 29th at the Martin Street Baptist Church in Raleigh.

\"In June, policy analysts at the RAND Corporation determined that the 14 states that turned down Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act were making a giant mistake. The 14, RAND said, would lose $8.4 billion a year in federal funds while denying 3.6 million of their residents--the working poor--a chance to obtain affordable health insurance.\" The KAISER Corporation estimated that accepting the money would create 37,000 new health care jobs in NC. However, Governor Pat McCrory turned down the money. Among those who advised it was Dr. Aldona Woos, Secretary of NCDHW. The state's taxpayers will now be saddled with the payment of the lost billions. Meanwhile, WRAL-TV in Raleigh reported that Woos had handed out $1.7 million in pay raises to 280 staffers, many with \"no career of educational experience for the jobs they hold.\"
