Concern over environmental pollution from large livestock operations prompted the Chatham County Board of Health to propose regulations. Public hearings have since pointed out flaws in the wording. Further study is needed.

Billie Rogers and Margaret Pollard are lobbying for pesticide regulations based on a common-sense respect for life. In 1985, the Gorgus residents were victims of pesticide spraying by the Boise Cascade paper company which caused health and environmental problems in their community. The state denied that his occurred and suppressed reports that a direct spray occurred. Rogers and Pollard are lobbying to increase the buffer zone around homes from 100 to 300 feet to protect public health.

Grace Higgs is the winner of a 1993 Independent Weekly Citizen Award. Higgs is the co-coordinator of the Interfaith Community Kitchen in Chapel Hill. She has spent the past ten years feeding people and developing relationships with those she serves.

Linda Mabry is the winner of a 1992 Independent Citizen Award. Mabry is an organizer for the NC Occupational Safety and Health department. Mabry’s goal is to fight for the rights of workers to have safe, healthy workplaces. She recently created the Injured Workers’ Network to provide a source of solidarity and support for people who have been hurt on the job.

The Orange County’s Women’s Center is praised for its work serving the women of Orange County, but that hasn’t protected it from conflict. The Center is currently divided over The Women’s Book Exchange and 5 board members have resigned as a result. The board voted to rescind the merger agreement between the Center and the Book Exchange after a dispute over the control of the lending library caused by lesbian oriented books. Intended to serve all women, some question whether the Center does so after what they feel is sexual discrimination.

Although his teaching earns high marks, as does his advocacy for those without legal aid, Barry Nakell, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill law professor, was fired after two shoplifting charges. He received support from a faculty committee and is appealing the decision.
