Abstract:
The North Carolina Museum of Art opens a new park on November 6, 2016. The park will feature sculptures and two speech-bubble-shaped benches by the conceptual artist Hank Willis Thomas. Thomas’s work examines race, identity, representation, and commerce, and seeks to broaden community engagement.

North Carolina’s legislative and congressional districts have changed boundaries numerous times before primaries and elections. Last month, Republicans introduced House Bill 200, which would establish an independent redistricting commission. Members of both parties would be appointed to the commission and it would take redistricting mostly out of the lawmakers’ hands.

Artist Luke Demarest has a new solo exhibit at Durham’s Carrack Modern Art called, Aibohphobia and the Reifer’s Schadenfreude. Demarest uses 3-D printing and other mediums to test the boundaries of language, the borders between human and machine, and the interaction of design and chance.

Last January, the University of North Carolina's increasingly conservative board of governors requested Tom Ross's resignation as system president. The decision was widely panned as political, and the direction of the UNC system is unknown. Ross, now at Duke University, believes universities should remain non-partisan and focus on the importance of education and research.
