UNC researchers Hannah Gill and Mai Nguyen analyzed crime data from five North Carolina counties to investigate the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement 287(g) program. Their analysis revealed high program costs, undocumented residents, and inaccurate arrests. Gill and Nguyen discuss the complexity of Hispanic immigrants in Alamance County and sociopolitical implications.

In 2009, UNC professor Maureen Berner, East Carolina University political scientist Sharon Paynter, and photojournalist Donn Young documented the work of nonprofits and volunteers who help feed the working poor. The Raleigh food bank established temporary food-assistance agencies that never closed due to increasing demand for food. A more practical approach might be to provide refrigerators and other resources to food banks and pantries.

North Carolina could become the first state to generate wind power from in-water turbines. UNC researchers and Duke Energy have teamed up to install three pilot wind turbines. They are studying the effects of wind farms on fishing industries, public perceptions, and legal implications.

Recent research on the Cambrian explosion, which occurred over 500 million years ago, is changing our understanding of evolution and the history of animal life. Geochemist Justine Ries sampled ancient rocks in Namibia and found evidence of sulfur isotopes. His findings provide insight to the environmental conditions of the Cambrian explosion.

According to UNC researchers, climate change must be addressed now, despite debates on whether it is real or not. North Carolina will likely see more intense droughts and storms that will cause severe flooding and landslides. Researchers advise improving energy efficiency and changing development patterns, especially at the coast and in the mountains.

Terrence Holt previously taught English and creative writing, but switched careers to become a geriatrician following his father’s death. Holt began to incorporate both careers by asking cancer patients in UNC’s chemotherapy clinic if they would like to write their personal stories. Holt is now a contributing editor and website columnist.

According to UNC sociologist Charles Kurzman, the kind of radicalization that leads to violence is much less common in the United States than in Western Europe. Reasons for this could be demographics, law enforcement, communication, and political activism. Omid Safi, a religious studies professor, says that Muslim Americans should become more involved in public discourse to help curtail radicalization and terrorism.

UNC doctoral student Darin Waters is writing the history of the Young Men’s Institute Cultural Center at the Biltmore Estate, which has offered educational programs and other services for African Americans in Asheville since 1893. Waters discovered the Biltmore Estate did not did not force African Americans to leave; rather, Biltmore was part of a mutual agreement that relied on the help of black craftsman and philanthropy.

UNC historians Lars Schoultz and Louis Perez have been studying United States history with Cuba. Schoultz analyzed unpublished archives from the CIA during the Bay of Pigs Invasion, which confirm plans for using U.S. troops in Cuba. Perez documented metaphors that U.S. policymakers and politicians have used to depict Cuba as a country needing to be saved. Both authors agree that the U.S. should engage with Cuba and end the embargo.
