Abstract:

A group of women share their family stories and personal experiences growing up in New Bern in the 1920s and 1930s. The women talk about childhood and life changes from hurricanes, the depression, and illnesses. Their stories reveal how we have gone from an agricultural economy to an economy dependent upon the military and tourism.

Abstract:

The authors discuss the importance of waterways for transportation in eastern North Carolina during the 17th- and 18th-centuries. At that time it was the only mode of travel to cover any distance in a reasonable amount of time and remained so until railroads replaced them in the early 19th-century. Bridges and ferries were necessities and were sources of income to their operators, and many farmers and manufacturers relied on water travel to get their products to market.

Abstract:

The early settlers of New Bern and Craven County faced many of the same problems that exist today, such as what to do with the poor and indigent, the orphan, and those who have contagious diseases. In North Carolina, the Anglican parish had the primary responsibility for dealing with such issues.
