During World War II thousands of prisoners of war spent time in North Carolina prison camps. Billinger discusses where they came from, what they did as POWs, and how the incarceration changed some of them. The article includes a map identifying the eighteen camps where German POWs were held.

Abstract:
Out of approximately 370,000 German POWs on U.S. soil, the state held 10,000 in eighteen camps. These camps were simply tents surrounded by barbed-wire fencing and watchtowers and were located in Pender, Onslow, Richmond, Scotland, Union, and New Hanover Counties.

Abstract:
During World War II, Camp Sutton in Union County was a US Army engineer training base and prisoner-of-war camp. Camp Sutton housed over 1,000 German soldiers captured in France, Italy, and North Africa. One Camp Sutton prisoner, Matthias Buschheuer, relates his experiences which were common amongst his German comrades. Buschheuer's pleasant experiences at Camp Sutton created strong bonds with many North Carolinians that became lifelong friendships.
