Wilmington has celebrated its Azalea Festival since 1948, when the azaleas open with red, purple, pink, white, and orange colors. This is the time when the Azalea Belles appear as part of the festival. This is a group of 137 young women wearing period costumes of the Old South. Each woman receives a handmade hoop dress, frilly gloves, and a parasol. Bass describes what is required of the Belles during the festival.

Mark Bannerman and his wife Mary Louise live in Columbus County on the farm that had belonged to his grandfather. For years he created his art while teaching art at Whiteville High School. Now retired, he is a full-time artist who practices what he preached to his students--\"to look at things differently.\" He finds treasures in candy wrappers, rain-gutter mesh, old buttons, bits of metals, and other tossed away materials and turns them into colleges which reflect life in Eastern North Carolina. Besides his colleges, he paints figurative works, portraits, and landscapes.

Wilmington's Rx Restaurant & Bar opened in 2012 in a building that housed a pharmacy for the majority of the twentieth century. The architecture and some interior design elements are reminiscent of the structure's former business, while the cooks use old-fashioned cooking methods and promote local produce.

Alfredo DiPinto was born in Cerignola in southeastern Italy. His family immigrated to South Bend, Indiana where the played basketball and earned a scholarship to what is now UNC Pembroke. DiPinto's athletic background has also helped him with the restaurant game as he helps to revitalize downtown Clinton, North Carolina with traditional Italian cuisine.

The small town of Clinton hosts an authentic Italian restaurant that pulls out-of-towners away from the highway. Alfredo’s Ristorante Italiano is run by Italian-born Alfred DiPinto, who came to North Carolina for school in the 1980’s. After opening the restaurant in 2010, it has pulled in business to the small town, revitalizing the downtown area and encouraged renovation of the historic buildings.

In downtown Clinton on courthouse square behind station WCLN-AM's big picture windows, the Over the Hill Gang--\"Grandpa\" Pat Dixon, Nolan \"Z\" Wiggins, and Lyman \"L-Man\" Horne--carries on an unscripted, talk show. Now in its 14th year, the show includes news, listener's phone calls, fast-food giveaways, and an occasional shout to people passing by the window.
