At age 17, Holt Thornton was a senior in Durham High School. Two years later, having dropped out of school, he was 19 and a veteran of the US Army Air Force, having flown 52 bombing missions over Europe. Alexander recounts Thornton's training and some of mission, including three on the Ploesti oil fields in Romania. He was discharged from Fort Bragg in September 1945 and started his senior year at Durham High School. His air group received a Presidential Unit Citation and he personally received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Purple Heart, and the Air Medal. Today, at age 78, he and his wife live in Zebulon.

Alexander explores the brief but eventful life of Lawrence O'Bryan Branch. He studied law at Cambridge Law School and practiced law in Florida. There he served six months fighting the Seminole Indians. He returned home in 1848 and set up a practice in Raleigh and became involved in politics. The bulk of the article consists of his service at the Civil War in which he was a General. He was in the fight at New Bern, campaigned in Virginia, fought in the Seven Days Battle and at Cedar Mountain, and later Manassas, Harper's Ferry and Sharpsburg, where he was killed.

At the beginning of the Civil War, Raleigh had a population of around 4,800 people. The city would become a center for the treatment of the sick and wounded, and the state's first military hospital was established there almost immediately after the outbreak of hostilities. Alexander provides a brief history of the hospitals with a focus on the famous Raleigh physician, Dr. E. Burke Haywood.

Alexander relates events experienced by the crew of the Unites States Minesweeper YMS 195 during World War II. The Executive Officer, and later her Captain, was Armistead Jones Maupin of Raleigh. He is now 83 years old, and lives with his wife in Raleigh.
