Fig trees are popular with homeowners in the Durham area because they are cold-hardy, prolific, and flourish in a range of soils. Starting in late July or early August, the fruit begins to ripen on the tree. There are five fig trees rooted on public property within Durham city limits, ripe for the picking.

More than six thousand pastors have signed a letter to President Donald Trump supporting the country’s refugee resettlement program, including almost twenty from North Carolina. Supporters say that loving one’s neighbor and welcoming the stranger are key tenets of Christianity. Durham’s Hope Valley Baptist Church and other volunteers have converted spaces into short-term housing and become mentors for refugees.

Reorganization of the United States Department of Agriculture may have significant impacts to North Carolina farms and rural communities. The proposal combines USDA divisions in charge of farm subsidies and land stewardship, areas in which the department interacts directly with farmers. Reorganization would also eliminate the undersecretary for rural development, which worries small farm advocates.

Durham choreographer Justin Tornow leads the dance group COMPANY in her latest work, No. 19/Modulations, which premieres this week both inside and outside of 21c Museum Hotel Durham. The innovative performance incorporates the multimedia work of almost ten other artists, including Tornow’s partner, visual artist Heather Gordon.
