Significant restoration progress along the parkway has been made since Tropical Storm Helene debut in September 2024. Construction for the parkway began in September 1935 and interrupted for a period during World War II. by 1966, all but 7.7 miles of the project was completed.

"Mary Helen Goodloe-Murphy is an Outer Banks Legend." Moving to the Outer Banks in 1986, she became a report for the local newspaper, "The Coastland Times" in 1990 and has covered area happenings ever since. She has also been involved with Radio Hatteras, a vital source of information to local residents, especially during tropical storms, since its inception eleven years ago.
