Joseph Albert Gaither founded Ridgeview, a sock and hosiery manufacturing business in Newton in 1912. the company closed in 2000, with annual sales around $100 million but struggled to make a profit. Hugh Gaither opened Hickory-based Feetures 22 years ago, selling high performance socks to runners.

Charlotte Pipe and Foundry is one of North Carolina's largest privately held companies, employing a workforce of 2700 across 10 plants in eight states. This includes 530, who work in the new location in Oakboro in Stanly County. Plastics now represent about 60 percent of the firm's business, while the remaining 40 percent focuses on iron pipes. The company opened in 1901. Hooper Hardison is CEO.
