Lee describes the red squirrel. It is half the size of the gray squirrel and lives in the western counties of the state in forests above 3,500 feet.

Abstract:

Turtles are found throughout most of eastern North Carolina, inhabiting shallow inlets, ponds, and quiet coves. These freshwater dwellers include the spotted turtle, red-bellied turtle, eastern mud turtle, box turtle, and softshell turtle.

Abstract:

The Carolina wren is the largest wren in the eastern United States, with the Florida wren being a close second. It is marked conspicuously with a white stripe above the eyes, and both male and female have the same coloration. The birds are reddish or cinnamon brown above and buff-colored below. They have white chins and very narrow black barrings on the wings. Peterson describes his observations of a nesting Carolina wren.
