In North Carolina the impact in 2013 was estimated at $48 billion, or 12 percent of the gross state product. The article lists the top ten counties for defense contracts in 2012, the top regions for contracts, and the number of military personnel in the state by their respective branches.

The North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro is investing $8.5 million for an expansion of its polar bear exhibit. The zoo's two polar bears were transferred to other zoos when expansion began in 2011, and both have since died. The plan was to expand to six bears when the exhibit area was completed.
