J. Brooks West, III, also known as J. W. Butterfield, heads Butterfields Candy Company, which is located in Nash County. In one form or another, the company has been around since 1924, when it began as Candy Cane Co., of Winston-Salem. The company employs forty workers and makes 5,000 pounds of candy a day. Yearly sales are between $2 and $4 million.
Abstract:
Summit Hill, a 34-acre horse farm in Apex, is part of one of the state's fastest growing industries. Owners Ben and Erin Tursam provide boarding, grooming, and lessons. The North Carolina Horse Council estimates that North Carolinians, both owners and riders, spend over $500 million a year in the horse business.
