"Founded in 1981, East Carolina University's program in maritime studies is one of the nation's leading graduate programs in underwater archaeology." This past summer, the program garnered national headlines with the discovery of the Spanish privateer, La Fortuna.

Abstract:

With a broader plan to reduce costs by $25 million over the next three years, ECU will eliminate six academic programs. the University has funded the Country Doctor Museum since 2002. Plans are to gift the museum to another organization.
