Marty Tharpe's Spevco, Inc., located in Pfafftown, creates unusual tractor trailers. When companies want to advertise at fairs or sporting events temporarily, Spevco creates trailers that unfold into stages, sales kiosks, and A-V systems - even a 63-foot Walt Disney castle.

In 1996, Dave Boliek founded ExplorNet, Inc. The nonprofit, Durham-based company matches schools needing computers with companies disposing of their old ones. To date, the company has received 200 computers from 25 businesses.

In 1997, when David Ghantt and accomplices robbed Loomis, Fargo, & Co. in Charlotte of $17 million, they pulled off the largest theft in the state's history and the nation's second largest. All were captured and most of the money recovered.

Larry Pitt gave up the corporate world to become executive director of the North Carolina Outward Bound School in Asheville. The school handles over 5,000 people yearly who participate in such activities as rock- climbing and kayaking.
