It appvears that an ordinance was passed in that city, for the benefit of the sleepers, prohibit- ing the blowing of locomotive Whistles within the corporate limits of the town. The engin- eer of No, 11 was arrested on charge of violating this ordi- nance. the penalty of whieh is $25.0 blow. With the engineer under arrest, Conductor Jone: got to work on a wire with Cap- tain Kyder’s office, while the postal olerks notified the mayor that he was engaged in a serious piece of business in obstructing the United States mails, engineer bad put up a bluff about not: going up town under arrest, and the chief of police had given him 15 minutes in which to pay the $25 fine or go to the lock up. The mayor stood firm, and the result was that in the end the engineer paid over the fine, and the train was permitted to pro- ceed, afte: a detention of one hour, during which time the passengers had become rather weary of the scenery about Spartanburg-—Greensboro ,'el- ‘gr at. The situation in the Klondike seems to be anything else but epcouraging. Information received within the last few days from Dawson Qity states that moro than one ‘thousand discouraged argonaut: are now working their way back from the mining eamps to the sea. This eagernessto return home ‘jis due to the prospect of almosi ecrtain starvaticn which stares the helpless Alaskan gold hunt- ers in the face. On account of the scarcity of provisions in the Klondike, even the most success- ful oid hunters at the camps are forced to recognize the imminent perils of the situation; for when once the supply of food gives out, even gold dust loses its vharm. If the spectacle of the return- ing argonauts teaches anything, it teaches that the truest gold of life is not found in its Klondikes but in the genial glow of its fire- sides.—Atlanta Constitution. Prosperity on Georgia Farms. “The farmers cf Georgia are ib the most prosperous condition they have ever been,” said a promihent business man, and one who usually weighs his words well when he speaks, recently. “T have traveled over the State considerably within the past tew weeks,” e continued, “and es- pecially the territory tributary to Sayanoab. I have talked with 3 number of farmers and with Others who come constantly in contact with them, and the gen- eral verdict is that the farmers are in better condition than they | have been in years. The crops are generally good, far above the average, both cotton and corn. What is better scill, the farmers are living at home, and this year a crop of cotton will come Learer being acush crop than apy they have ever raised. The result isa general feeling of contentment, thrcughout the country. In fact, the condition of the farmers in Georgia, and doubtless through- out the south generally, has been much better during the past three or four years than they have been giyen credit for. They have not much money to spend bus they dave been reaching n-arer to independence eyery year. They owe less money than they ever did, and there are fewer mortgages than in any other section of the’ country. The mortgaged farm is no longer the rule, but a rare exception.” -Sa- vannah Morning News. allenic ano Framing the Chifdren. “John,” said Mrs, Wisely to ber lisge lord the other evening, according to the Detroit tree Press, “I want to have a very frank talk with you. Do you realize that the boys are old enough now to ubserve andare begin- ning to form their characters ?” “Ot course Ido. Great boys.” Yr “Yes, and we want them to be great men They naturally look up to you, Jolin, more than to anybody else For their sakes you mu_t be careful in You fell oyer a chair the other day and used some what you do and say, very imp oper language. I hear¢ Willie repeat it when he stubbed his toe in the back yard.” “he litte rascal! He chuckled the father, “Yes, John, and they pretend to emoke cigars and pour drinks from an imaginary de.anter. Can't you set them better examples ?” “Say, little one, I heard Amy play- ing keep house one afternoon Jately. When callers were announced she sent out word that she was not at home. When she did consent to receive any one she combed them down to beat the band before they were admitted. One was an old frun.p, another was an intolerable bore, and q third better ‘a didn’t ?’’ r looking after the cbildren. You “couldn’t have done it Letter yourself’ “I see what, you mean, sit. No use of rubbing it in. ~ But wait, dear,” in e softer voice, “Let's both do better. It’s tor their sakes, you know.” “[’ll go you,” and they shook hand’s As John left that evening he slip- ped up on the tront steps and made the air blue, Around ibe corner he hit his cigar. Mrs. Wisely had some ani- mated gossip wiih a neighbor. And yet the children seem to thrive. The Berry Business About Wil mington to be Greatly Increased. moot The truckers throughout the section around Wilmington have been busy planting strawberries, and we learn that the acreage will be more thandouble that of last year. The mild winter has been favoiable for the plants and they aro looking fine, In some quarters the acreage has been more than doubled. At Chad- bourn the acreage in berries the past season was 2) while e coming season it will be 150 acres. If the product is doubled and prices hold up, the increased acreage means that this section will ship the coming season over 300,000 crates, and the value at the averaging prices obtained last season Wil amount to a million and a halt dollars. The ship- ments last season were 164,188 Crates, 32 quarts vo the crate, and they soid at $780,597.66.—Wil- mington Messenger.
