This excursion gave the visiters an opportunity of seeing the spleudid harbor of Galveston, and after viewing the vast water front they were not surprised that this Is one of the toremost in Uncle Sam’s domain. ‘fhe government, reovgnizing the importance of having a good port here, has dove much toward improving the harbor. Someihing that greatly interested the excursionists was the large jetties built for the purpose of deeping the channel across the bar. These jettics consist of two immeuse stone structures a mile apart that extend out four miles across the bar. Entrance to the harbor is made through the channel between these jetties, and there is sufti- cient depth of water for vessels of as great as 25 feet draught to pass in safety.
