Should Read More.
It is generally conceded that this is a
reading age, yetone who comes in touch
with the general run of humanity as do
the doctors, lawyers, ministers and ea-
itera, sees every day, people unsbie to
coaverse on or to undevstand the doings
of the age because they read neither
books nor pewspapers. The price of
such a knowledge and the time to ac-
{uke at least, an inteligible part is in
‘|the reach of nearly all and ic is their
own fault.
The man who undertakes to be intel-
ligeot and does not read the newspa-
pers, at least. is like a lawyer wiihout
a knowledge of law, a docter without a
knowledge of materia medica, a preach-
er with a knewledge of the Bible. you
see the poiut :? Then read a part of
your rest time. You will find it pays in
mure ways than are meutioned- here.—

Much Truth in This.
We believe that there is a great
deal of sympathy wasted on the
farmer. For several years in
North Carolina the poverty of
the farmer has been discussed.
The truth of the matter is that as
a class they dre - better off than
town people. There are few
farmers in western North Caro-|.
lina who bave not got a year’s
provisions ahead ail the time,}
while most ot our city cousins
think themselves fortunate in
being well provided with the
necessities of life a month ahead.
Some farms in the east are mort-
gazed- This is bad, but not as
bad as alarge majority of town
peopie who mare nothing to mort-
gage.
Itis not right to be always
misrepresenting ~ the ers.
They are by no means: the
lest class of people.— High Point
