Writing in the current issue of
the new Black Excellence magazine
on ‘‘Naming The Race,’’ Adams
points out that “persons of color’
in the United States have been
identified as ‘‘Colored, Negro,
Afro-American and Black,”’
before the Rev. Jesse Jackson sug-
gested using the original term,
‘*African-American,”’ for U.S.
citizens whose ancestors came
from the new world’s . second
largest continent.

The basic rationale for sug-
gesting this specific change now
was that of all the distinct ethnic
and cultural groups. in America,
‘blacks’? were the only group
which did not have a clear
geographic reference point in its
name (such as Italian-American or

After the funeral of my dear
friend, I just couldn’t erase the
memory of how he looked when
they dragged him from the river.
I did all that I could to comfort his
brother, but nothing I could say
did much good. So I decided to
look again for a job. This time I
was lucky enough to find one. It
was just what I needed to help
calm my nerves. The job that I
found was at a drug store deliver-
ing medicine and other things
that were ordered.

There were two other delivery
boys there whom I knew very
well, so that made the job a very
pleasant place to work and for a
while I was very happy there.

I quickly learned the route and
was doing good until one day I got
an order to deliver some things to
one of the customers whom I had
delivered to for a long time. The
druggist came to the little room
in back where we sat and waited
for our orders to be called out us
and yelled trip James. So I
followed him to the counter
where the orders were kept and
picked up the one that I was sup-
posed to deliver. It was sprinkl-
ing rain so I put on a short coat
that I kept in the room for such
occasions. I put the coat on and
went out the door where we park-
ed our bicycles. I got on the one
that I always rode and took off.
I soon arrived at the house that
order went to. I parked the bike
and walked up the steps on to the
front porch and rang the door
bell.

After ringing it twice I hearda
voice say, ‘Who is it?’’ and I
answered back saying the boy
from the drugstore, and she sa

A few days passed and I was to
go there several times when one
day I wnet there and that’s when
some unusual things began to
happen.

The man at the soda fountain
came to the front door and call-
ed for me to come in the store
that he had a trip for me. It was
a lovely day, plenty of sunshine
and the temperature was about 75
or 80 degrees. I picked up the
order and took off. I arrived at
the place of the address on the
order, parked my bike, and went
on the porch and rang the
doorbell. A very soft voice said in
an almost-whisper to come in
because the door was not locked.
I walked in and just to my left I
could see her and hear a low
voice tell me to come over there.
The shades and curtains were
drawn and it was alomost dark in
the room where she stood. I
repeated that I was the boy from
the drugstore. That’s: when she

Tipping. A tip of some sort is

Whether or not you visit the
salon only a few times a year or
you have a standing weekly ap-

Atwater from the university’s 30-member board
of trustees asa moral victory.

Atwater, who became a convenient umbrella for
years of pent-up student frustration over campus
crime, housing, and student loans, was just as
lame in his Republican defense. Being as pure as
the driven snow, all this official of ‘‘the party of
Opportunity’’ wanted was a chance to serve the
black community by raising money and scholar-
ships for Howard and getting internships for the
students at the White House, Atwater intimated.

Both Jackson and Atwater reeked of political
partisanship; both were conveniently shielded
from the truth by their shared objective of con-
trolling the black vote. However partisan, their
ambitions were at least motivated by an under-
standable objective.

But it was a black columnist for The
Washington Post whose motives are suspect, at

best. Courtland Milloy, who has written previous-
ly that black people are incapable of economic
self-sufficiency, interpreted the student activism
as ‘Revolution by Flunking Out.”

The Howard students, he wrote, suffered from
the delusion that what they were doing was mean-
ingful. ‘‘What black students should really be
outrraged about is the fact that so many of them
are flunking out of school,”’ charged Milloy.

To prove his point he quoted from an article in

‘‘Harper’s’’ by an English teacher at a white col- .
lege in San Jose (previously, to prove his point

that blacks were too brain dead to run a business,
he used a white teacher at the University of
Maryland as his reference).

The black ‘‘drop-out rate is 72 percent,’’ despite
the white colleges’ attempt to help them. Rather
than demonstrating, they would be better off
“reading and studying,’ Milloy quoted the
teacher as saying. After all, blacks have ‘‘the
highest drop-out rate and lowest grade point
average of any group in American universities,”’
Milloy further quoted his source from San Jose
University.

And, Milloy stressed, the students at Howard
cannot justify this academic failure by denouncing
Atwater’s presence on the board of trustees. ‘“‘The
issue, for now, is the proliferation of mediocrity
among black college students, and what to do
about it,’’ the Black Sage of The Washington Post
proclaimed. He seems to suggest black students
are stupid (‘‘mediocre,’’ he says) because of ac-
tivism and retarded because they are activists.

Monday, April 10, by The Acting
Company, a touring drama com-

Back in May of 1984, the National
Association for the Advancement of Col-
ored People, in conjunction with the Na-
tional Urban League, jointly sponsored a
**Black Family Summit’’ which was held on
the campus of Fisk University in Nashville,
Tennessee.

The two sponsoring groups recognized
then that the black family, the single most
important institution in our community,
had come under withering assault by any
number of social factors. Among them
were racism, unemployment, inferior
educational opportunities, drugs, crime, as
well as other negative influences.

Those factors had had a devastating im-
pact on the family, the once impregnable
bastion of security and hope in the black
community.

The proportion of black children born
out of wedlock had increased nearly 60% or
almost three times the 1960 rate. The seeds
for an ever growing cycle of poverty, once

sown, had begun to grow to full bloom and

promised to reap an 5 ginticeliie harvest
within the country.

This in itself was alarming and it called —

for immediate action then, and it calls for
concerted action now on the part of the
African American community.

Black family crisis was not one brought
on by an intrinsic weakness in the body
politic of African Americans, but by
economic and political factors over which
African Americans had little or no control.

But, now, many of the conditions which
led to breakdown in the black family have
spilled over into white families as well.

Fortunately, there are some positive signs
that increasingly, all segments of society
have recognized that unless resolved, poten-
tially the breakdown of the family structure
can be as deadly as a nuclear attack.

There can be no question about it,
America must find solutions to he problems
which now involve families of every race.
The solutions must be found soon.
