Judge Clarence Thomas to be an Associate Justice of the

Supreme Court, and, in particular, the allegations of sexual
harassment made by Professor Anita Hill and the process by
which the Senate Judiciary Committee considered those
allegations.

I very much appreciate your kind words about my
handling of the recent hearings. I sought to conduct them
in as fair and impartial a manner as possible. As Chairman,
I believed that my obligation was to issue rulings, respond
to inquiries, and question the witnesses consistent with

that fairness and impartiality. It is gratifying to me that
you feel I met this objective.
