Dear Mr. Barker:

The North Carolina Council of Churches Committee for ERA has asked
me to write to you to express our hope that you will give thoughtful and
prayerful attention to the Equal Rights Amendment. We encourage you to
read carefully the enclosed brochure which contains statements by North

Carolina church leaders and organizations in support of the Equal Rights
Amendment.

We affirm that God has created male and female in God's image and
that Jesus related to women and men as equals. Jesus broke with the
cultural traditions of his day by speaking with women in public and by
teaching them the scriptures. God has given gifts and talents to all
persons in order that they may be about the work of building a better
world. We must not restrict anyone's legal right to use those gifts!

We would be happy to talk with you personally to answer any questions
you might have about the Biblical basis for equality of all persons.
Please feel free to contact me or other persons connected with the Council
of Churches for further information. You may obtain a more detailed
