Kermit Hunter’s Wings of ie ( Wis orning” STORY OF THE MARYLAND COLONY ST. MARY’S COUNTY FESTIVAL THEATRE Great Mills, Maryland = - DATES: Aug. 16 through 31, 1974 Tues. thru Sun. nights at 8:30 p.m. nas St. Mary's Department of Recreation and Parks I (eee ce J St. Mary’s Outdoor Drama Association The play opens at the dock area at Cowes, Isle of Wight in England on November 22, 1633 where an unlikely combination of Protestants and Catholics has assembled to sail for the New World, in two vessels - the Ark and the Dove. The religious theme is set as the settlers stop at the Island of Montserrat. The action continues in the Virginia Colony, and at the site of St. Mary’s City. The conflict with the Virginians over religion is found throughout the play. Despite the serious theme, Wings of the Morning, has humor, dancing, and song, as the historical significance of the founding of Maryland is presented in drama and pageantry. : Wings of the Morning : “IN EUROPE our ancestors built fortresses, with moats and drawbridges, symbolizing differences between men. “We intend to build an open city, symbolizing the brotherhood of man, the freedom of the human spirit.”’ The play will adhere strictly to the historic events that made St. Mary’s City the first spot in the New World where religious freedom was established by law. The first place where women were citizens.
